Teaching English
With Peruvians naturally being Spanish speakers, there is a real demand from local people to be taught English by fluent foreigners. Work is mainly at schools and directed towards children but there is also a lot of demand from community groups and adult groups we work with. Volunteers are placed in community schools, public schools or orphanage schools. Many of the people volunteers teach have only very basic English, therefore it is a requirement for volunteers to have at least a basic level of Spanish to teach on this program. Naturally a volunteer’s Spanish will improve over the course of their volunteering but it is highly recommended that the volunteer take advantage of the Spanish lessons offered by program staff in Peru.
Volunteer Placement
Local Sacred Valley School
This elementary school is located in the Sacred Valley which is approximately 60-90 minutes outside of Cusco. This school is run by the director and his staff of local teachers. The school receives 185 students, ranging in ages from 6-13 years old. Primarily the aim of this school is to provide the children with good quality education. Volunteers are encouraged to immerse themselves in the school and teach English, art and physical education. Additionally volunteers are involved in gardening and construction projects. Volunteers at this project live with a family in the Sacred Valley although they can travel to Cusco during the weekends. 1-4 volunteers generally work at this project. This is an example of a volunteer placement and not necessarily where i will be volunteering.
