Teaching

Volunteers are placed in community schools, public schools or orphanage schools. Many of the schools are constantly understaffed and are always in need of new volunteers. In this program, volunteers can work by themselves or alongside other teachers and volunteers. Typical subjects taught include – English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Art and Physical Education. Volunteers can teach all year round. During school holidays volunteers can teach in orphanages or take tutorials at local schools

Volunteer Placement

Franeli Children Centre

The New Franeli School is located in the Riruta community on the outskirts of the capital city Nairobi, 8km from the city centre. It was started six years ago and has over 180 children aged between 3 years (baby classes) to 15 years (upper classes). The school has a team of local teachers who have to take care of these children by teaching and counseling them. Many of these children have very needy cases and need someone to guide and support them. IVHQ volunteers working at this school have been teaching them English, mathematics and arts. In addition to this some of the volunteers have come up with projects like setting up classes and buying writing boards and stationary for the children. This is only an example placement which is one of many offered by IVHQ in Kenya and not necessarily the one I will be volunteering.
